Douglas Rushkoff's Exit Strategy
(Reviewed by Anne K Edwards of eBook Reviews, 2002)
As someone once said, prepare to be amazed. Exit Strategy will amaze you as you read it since it is much more than it seems! It was written as a satire, but upon reading it, you will find it to contain the elements of future forecasting, truths about modern life, business commentaries and several others. It is an education in the world of internet businesses and the airy bubbles created therein -- you get an idea of what happened in our own time. This author knows his field and has incorporated it into a lively and interesting, though somewhat searing report of business practices as told by Jamie Cohen.
Read this book with an eye to the several social commentaries woven into the text of the story that reach from the upper reaches of the business world to where the street people dwell. There is laughter hidden in the tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the various functionaries of this world. There is also sadness and, I think, regret found here for a lost innocence.
Presented as a document of our near future discovered two hundred years in the future, the discoverers are looking back at us. Their footnotes used to explain certain aspects of our lifestyles will make you laugh at their effort to understand our era. Show them a little compassion, as there is much we don't understand about ourselves either.
The author takes the willing reader several steps beyond reality as they explore the voids created in and by the characters in this story and their actions. Look beyond the veil of words used to tell the story. Is the author warning us of what is to come? Highly readable and enjoyable. Put this on your list of must reads. I look for others to follow by this talented author!
